Our Environmental Monitors were busy at Tsakane and Sigagula today. Brendan and Christinah visited Amass Disabled Center with Mr Mabunda and 2 Tsakani staff and did health and environmental presentations, including making Eco-bricks. Regernt at Sigagula did a lot of activities including: singing, dancing, reading speeches, and planting trees. Lunch was donated by Royal Malewane and the cake by Pick n' Pay. Environmental Monitors Internship: July 2019

Three of our Environmental Monitors, namely Christinah, Regernt and Brendan, who are based in the community, started their internship at Umbabat during the July 2019 school holidays.   Various skills programmes were organised by various members:  Lindsey Jones: how to research, lesson planning, PowerPoint, and presentation skills.  Motswari Private Nature Reserve: tracking skills and game drive  Ingwelala: kindly did most of the administration of the Internship programme and their team provided various opportunities to learn new skills. These included: solar panel assessment, alien vegetation removal, birding, building gabions, erosion control, housekeeping, managing reception, shop keeping, teaching the children in the staff village about the environment, working at the filling station, and so much more.  Noctuam: our counter-poaching unit allowed them to accompany them on a patrol.  Elephants Alive: Showed them how they record data and track Elephants within the reserve Bryan Havemann (Warden): Took them to recover the tusks and skull of an Elephant that had died in order to age the animal. A fantastic day with our EMs as we unpacked the tables and chairs for their classroom/library at Tsakane Special School. Now there is sufficient space to host students for environmental lessons, reading and games. New Environmental Monitors (2019-2022)

A big welcome to our new Environmental Monitors (EMs) for 2019-2022: Splender, Christinah, Brendan and Regernt. Yesterday we had our Inagural meeting where we planned the way forward. 2 EMs will be based at Sigagula Childrens Centre and 2 EMs will be based at Tsakane Special School. The Tsakane Special School has allowed the EMs to use their new library as a classroom. Currently we are looking to raise R5000 to buy tables and chairs for lessons in the library. Additional donations of library books, animal posters and book shelves are also welcome. New Outreach Team Member

The UPNRA Outreach team has been given an Environmental Monitor (EM), by the Kruger 2 Canyons Biosphere. Splendor Tshabalala started with the UPNR Outreach Team in July 2018. She will be based in the Sigagula Village of Acornhoek, just off the Orpen Rd with SAME. Her role is to assist with the after-school programme for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC). Subjects she focuses on during the school term are Maths and English and during the school holidays, it will be Art, Sport, Self-Development and Environmental Education. A recent request by Noctuam for Mountain Bikes to patrol the Kruger boundary was answered.After hearing about the extensive distances the Anti-poaching Unit was walking in order to check for anomalies,  Internationally renowned artist Maria Brink, based in Nelspruit, kindly donated 2 Mountain Bikes.The bikes will not only ensure that the APU is able to patrol quicker, but also reduce fatigue over the long periods they are out in the field.
